Weddiing Ceremony for Same Sex Marriage

This wedding ceremony was specifically written for a same-sex wedding. Some of the wording could be applied to other ceremonies as needed.

WELCOME
We have come together today to give formal recognition to the marriage of
NAME 1 and NAME 2

We gather to celebrate the gift of love and its presence among us. We rejoice that two people have chosen to commit themselves to a life of loving faithfulness to one another. We remember the words of the Psalmist, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

NAME 1 and NAME 2 you've come a long way to get to this day. Each of you has a story. You have traveled a path of your own. There were days that were difficult and there were days filled with happiness. And, the path that you followed is what brought you to this day. Together your story is of two people who recognize in one another something special, something that makes you feel more complete when you are together. And it is this vision of hope and happiness that gives you the courage to make a life-long commitment to each other today.

I would suggest to you that it is the great Mystery of life, some would say The Word of God that confirms your decision:
The past is approved. (The life you have lived was exactly the life experience you needed to bring you to this moment.)
You are accepted. (You are completely accepted and embraced by God's love.)
The future is open. (Your future together is yours to shape.)

NAME 1 and NAME 2,
You have chosen to be married in the tradition of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus considered marriage to be a sacred and important covenant. According to the Gospel of John, it was at a wedding that the very first sign of his station was given. And the miracle involved the transformation of water into the finest wine. We can only conclude that Jesus believed a marriage was a cause of great celebration and joy. Because Jesus recognized marriage as being a gift from God and blessed it by his first sign, I celebrate your decision to be married in this sacred tradition.

PRAYER
O’ Thou Kind Spirit of Love, we are each created as an expression of Thy love. Today, we ask Thy blessing upon NAME 1 and NAME 2 that their marriage may be a sign of their commitment to one another and their desire to make the world a brighter and happier place for all those around them. May the presence of light, peace, joy, love, life and substance be ever within, before and beside them. Looking always to the presence of the Christ in their marriage may their steps be guided and inspired by Thy Word. Amen.

COVENANT
Marriage is a covenant between two consenting adults. So, I ask you to join right hands, symbolically joining one to the other and creating a bond of oneness.

And now, NAME 1, I ask you to look into NAME 2’s eyes and repeat after me:
I give myself to you as your partner. I promise to love and support you in this marriage, in sickness and in health, in plenty and in want, in joy and in sorrow, as long as we both shall live.

And now, NAME 2, I ask you to look into NAME 1’s eyes and repeat after me:
I give myself to you as your partner. I promise to love and support you in this marriage, in sickness and in health, in plenty and in want, in joy and in sorrow, as long as we both shall live.

EXCHANGE OF RINGS
The wedding ring is a sign of encircling love and unending faithfulness. We pray that in all your life together your marriage may bring you joy and peace in one another.

NAME 1, will you place the ring on NAME 2’s finger and repeat after me:
This ring I give to you in token and pledge of my abiding love.

NAME 2, will you place the ring on NAME 1’s finger and repeat after me:
This ring I give to you in token and pledge of my abiding love.

BLESSING AND DECLARATION
Because NAME 1 and NAME 2 have made promises to one another and have sealed those promises with the giving and receiving of rings in the presence of this ordained minister and two witnesses, by the authority granted to me by the State of North Carolina, I declare them joined together in marriage, in the name of all that is holy.

NAME 1 and NAME 2 are now joined together in sacred marriage
